Lilies & Simple Gifts

Eye on the Sparrow

Lyrics

The Song of Ruth (on Lilies and Simple Gifts)

This is distinctly late-twentieth century music. Modern but nonetheless melodic and accessible, it's a setting of Ruth's famous statement of fidelity to her mother-in-law, Naomi, when – both of them widowed – Naomi urges her to return to her parents and Ruth refuses to leave her. The piece continues to increase in musical intensity until that last, moving chord. A crowd-pleaser in concert, it also makes a wonderful wedding song. (Sheet music available from Solo-Finder.com)

“Unique and stirring setting of this famous text, sung unforgettably by Julia Pabst.” — Carol Ruth Kimmel, Japan Foundation Fellow

“Wow! What a composition! I had to hear it a few times for familiarity, but since then I can hear it over and over again without ever getting tired of it! It's a real experience. Like the Schechtman 'Psalm 23', the conclusion never fails to bring tears to my eyes.” — reviewer, Amazon

Text: based on Ruth 1: 16, 17 (there are at least two versions of the text, the one given here is the one used on this CD.)

Intreat me not to leave you, or to return from following you: for where you go, I will go; and where you lodge I will lodge: your people shall be my people, and your God my God.
Your distress is my own; and never will I forsake you. Your distress is my own, and then, too, I'm by your side.
May the Lord bless you henceforth, and more also.
Nothing at all parts me from you.
